This week we're exploring how the global agreement produced at the COP21 climate change summit will impact the carbon intensive energy industry here in the U.S. In light of the landmark accord, how will the American energy industry move beyond carbon and towards clean energy?

Today, we look at the Clean Power Plan—President Obama's executive order to cut U.S. carbon emissions from power plants by 32 percent by 2030. The Clean Power Plan (CPP) is a core part of the pledge the U.S. made at the climate summit in Paris, but implementing the CPP is easier said than done.

To date, 27 states have moved to sue the EPA to stop the CPP—they're accusing the agency of going beyond it's congressional authority by mandating clean energy alternatives.

Emily Guerin is a reporter for Inside Energy based in North Dakota, one of the states part of the lawsuit against the EPA. She discusses the future of the CPP, and the lawsuit being pursued by the states.

What you'll learn from this segment:

  • How the Clean Power Plan works.
  • What states have to do to comply.
  • What regulators in North Dakota are saying about the plan.
